The role of RNA modifications in neurological diseases

tRNAs are the most intensively modified RNAs with up to 16 modified residues (around 20% of the complete tRNA). Although the dynamic nature of tRNA modifications is crucial to cell survival, Loss or creation of certain RNA modifications are involved in cancer, neuronal diseases and mitochondrial diseases.

Stress induced RNA modification mechanisms in yeast

Yeast, stricter S. cerevisiae is among the best-studied model organisms for eukaryotic biology. It encodes similar proteins as mammals, and therefore provides parallels to the kingdom of Animalia, thus to human. Over the last three decades much research has been conducted to examine epigenetics of yeast and other organisms.

New antibiotic targets based on novel RNA modifications

One area of interest is the discovery of yet uncharacterized RNA modifications in bacteria which often play an important role in virulence. As a result of early evolutionary development of RNA, these modifications might have completely different targets in the cell.

RNA modifications

The central dogma of molecular biology states that DNA is the storage of the genetic code, which is transcribed into messenger RNA (mRNA) and translated into proteins with the help of transfer RNA (tRNA) and ribosomal RNA (rRNA)
